Mizuki's family runs a small metalworking shop near the river. What they make are machine parts and metal fittings used in kitchens. A company they had dealt with for years closed its factory last year, and orders halved. Her father said the work would come back if they waited, but Mizuki could not see it that way. After three years at a company, Mizuki began helping with the family business.
The first thing she did was build a website. Her father did not object, but when she started taking photographs he tilted his head.「こんな油だらけの機械、だれが見たいんだ。」“Who wants to look at oily machines like these?” Mizuki put the camera down and thought for a moment. The workshop really was dark, and every photograph came out grey.
“I don't think anything gets across unless the photographs are taken properly.” On her next day off, Mizuki cleaned the windows and tidied the workbench. In the morning, when the light came in, she laid the parts out one by one and photographed them. The picture of the small fittings in a row was prettier than she had expected. Her father said nothing, but the next day he had changed into new work clothes.
Two months after the website went up, not a single enquiry had come. If they simply waited, nothing would happen. Mizuki printed out the photographs and called on nearby companies. At the fifteenth, Mr Onishi from a company that makes pans listened to her.「この金具、うちの鍋に合うかもしれない。」“These fittings might suit our pans.”
It started with a trial order of a hundred. If it came to making a thousand, their current machines would not keep up. Her father asked an old acquaintance's workshop for help.「一人でやらない限り、できることは増えるんだな。」“So as long as you don't do it all alone, there's more you can do.” It was the first time Mizuki had heard her father say anything like that.
Six months later, the pans appeared in the shops. Inside the handle is a fitting made at Mizuki's family workshop. Even so, Mizuki stops in her tracks every time she sees the pan on a shelf. Her father is apparently taking photographs of the workshop himself now.「見てもらわない限り、何も始まらないからな」と、電話で笑っていた。“Nothing starts unless people see it,” he laughed down the phone.
