Hayato works at an art museum, fifteen minutes' walk from the station. His job is the front desk: selling tickets, taking bags, and giving directions. The exhibitions change every three months, so what he has to remember keeps growing. On the wall just inside, a list of rules is displayed in large letters.「作品に手を触れてはならない」という一文が、いちばん上に書かれている。At the very top is the line, “Visitors must not touch the works.”
When he started, Hayato tried to learn every rule in the museum. But the rules differ slightly from exhibition to exhibition. Depending on the work, there are some you may photograph. Since he could not keep it all in his head, Hayato took to carrying a notebook.
One Sunday, a woman of about seventy came to the desk. She said she had changed trains to come and see the exhibition of old textiles.「これは、さわってもいいものですか。」“Am I allowed to touch these?” Hayato hesitated, then checked his notebook before answering.「申し訳ありません。 “I'm very sorry. The pieces in this room are not to be touched.”
The woman looked disappointed, but she nodded at once. She told him she had woven the same kind of textile herself when she was young.「糸の太さは、手でさわればすぐに分かるんですよ。」“You can tell the thickness of the thread straight away, just by touching it.” Hayato could not think of anything to say, and simply listened. Rules are rules, so he had no choice but to refuse.
That evening, Hayato told the director about the woman. The director thought for a while, then brought a box out of the store room. Inside were offcuts of textile that had not been used in the exhibition.「これなら、さわっていただけますね。」“These she could certainly touch.” From the following week, a small table stood beside the front desk.
On it are the offcuts and a card saying, “Please do touch.” Depending on the visitor, some spend longer here than in front of the glass. Children always reach out, and older visitors press the cloth slowly with their fingers. Depending on the exhibition, there are times when a table like this cannot be prepared. Even so, Hayato now raises the idea himself when the next exhibition is discussed.
