In the entrance hall of the block where Naomi lives, there was a shelf that nobody used. It had originally been a place for umbrellas, but it had stood empty for ten years or so. One day the caretaker, Mr Ashida, suggested making it into a bookshelf. People would leave books they had finished, and anyone could take one home. Naomi thought it sounded interesting and decided to help.
First, they had to write a notice to hand out to the residents. Mr Ashida brought a short text he had written in a notebook.「本はご自由にお持ち帰りください。 “Please take any book home. However, be sure to return it once you have finished.” There was simply no way to check one by one whether people had returned them.「見ていないところのことは、分かりませんよね。」“Nobody can know what happens out of sight, can they?” Mr Ashida nodded and said, “That's why we won't know anything unless we try it.”
The bookshelf was finished on a Saturday morning. The books the residents brought came to more than sixty on the first day. In the end the notice was changed to read like this.「どの本もご自由にどうぞ。 “Please help yourself to any book. However, please take no more than three at a time.” A month later, the number of books had halved. Naomi was a little disappointed, but Mr Ashida did not seem bothered.
“The ones that have gone are being read in somebody's flat.” In the second month, books she had never seen before appeared. Beside the shelf there was a notebook somebody had left. In it were short notes about the books people had read. The handwriting was different, so it is clear that more than one person is writing.
One day in autumn, a notice went up in the entrance hall.「本の数が増えてきました。 “The number of books has grown. We shall therefore put up a second shelf.” Mr Ashida pointed at the wall on the other side.「場所はあります。 “There is room. However, let us keep it small enough not to be in people's way.” On the day the new shelf arrived, Naomi put the first book on it. You don't know unless you try, Mr Ashida had said. He had been quite right, Naomi thinks now.
