It was two years ago in spring that Eri moved to this town. When summer comes, a Bon dance is held in the town square. Last year, she only watched from a distance, as a spectator. The person beating the drum up on the tower was a white-haired man. The sound stayed in her ears even after she got home.
In May this year, a notice asking for drum trainees came round on the neighbourhood circular. Eri hesitated, but plucked up the courage to ring the community centre. The man who answered was Mr Horiuchi, the head of the preservation society.「この祭りは、五十年にわたって続いているんですよ。」"This festival has been going for fifty years, you know." Even over the phone, Mr Horiuchi's voice was bright.「若い人が来てくれるなら、大歓迎です。」"If young people want to join us, they're more than welcome."
Practice was held twice a week over the two months from June. Watching the drum and playing it were two completely different things. Again and again she was told to strike with her whole body, not her arms. Her hands blistered, and the next day she couldn't lift her arms. Even so, at the moment when everyone's beats came together, her whole body seemed to tremble. Those who came to the practices ranged from children to people in their seventies, about twenty in all.
Three days before the festival, Mr Horiuchi said this to Eri.「本番、最初の三曲をたたいてみませんか。」"How about playing the first three pieces on the night?" Eri was so surprised that she almost refused on the spot.「二年しか住んでいない私が、いいんでしょうか。」"Is it really all right for me, when I've only lived here two years?" Mr Horiuchi laughed.「長く住んでいるかどうかは、関係ありませんよ。」"Whether you've lived here a long time has nothing to do with it."
On the night of the festival, the view from up on the tower was nothing like what she had imagined. In the light of the lanterns, several hundred people were dancing in a circle. With the very first beat, the shaking in her hands stopped. Along with the sound of the drum, the ring of dancers slowly began to turn. The three pieces were over in no time. As Eri came down, one neighbour after another spoke to her. When the festival, which went on over two days, came to an end, the square returned to being the quiet place it had been. Even so, inside Eri the sound of the drum is still ringing.
