At the end of May a sheet of paper went up on the noticeboard of the block of flats. It announced that work on the outside walls would be carried out over two months from June. Chihiro stopped in front of it and checked the dates again and again. While the work went on, nothing could be left on the balcony.
According to the management company, putting up the scaffolding would take about a week. During that time a work net would hang outside the windows. The place where she dried her washing would be out of use for two whole months.
Once June came, the noise started at seven in the morning. Chihiro got into the habit of shutting every window before she went out. She decided to do her washing only twice a week. With a line strung across the room, the small flat felt smaller still.
One Saturday at midday there was a voice outside the window. Beyond the net stood a young workman.「すみません、お昼どきに。 Sorry to disturb your lunch. We'll be finished in another thirty minutes." Chihiro opened the window a little and bowed. According to a neighbour, this was the first such work in fifteen years. That meant the same walls had taken the rain and the wind for fifteen years.
At the beginning of August the net came down. The light coming through the window felt far brighter than before. Chihiro stepped out onto the balcony for the first time in ages and put out a chair. In the evening the light was just right for sitting there and reading. Now that the noise of those two months had stopped, she felt oddly a little lonely. Next time there was work, she thought, she would manage a little better.
