It was last year that pets became allowed in the block of flats where Kana lives. As soon as she heard the rules were changing, Kana started getting ready to keep a dog. Living with a dog had been her dream since she was a child. The one that came to her was a small brown mongrel, and she named her Mocha. For the first week she was so happy she couldn't concentrate on work.
Before long, though, life became hard. Apparently Mocha barked the whole time she was left at home alone. One day, a sheet of paper appeared in the letterbox.「三階の犬の声が、昼間よく聞こえます。」"The dog on the third floor can often be heard during the day." No name was written on it. If things went on like this, it could well cause trouble with the neighbours.
Kana read several books to find out how to train a dog. Suddenly going out for long periods, they said, could actually make the dog more anxious. So she gradually lengthened the time she was out, five minutes, then ten. She also increased the morning walk to thirty minutes. Sweet as Mocha was, some days Kana thought about how much work she was as well. All the same, she had made up her mind that she would never receive a note like that again.
At walk time, she often runs into Mr Shibata from the same building. He is a man in his seventies with an elderly white dog.「うちのも、若いころはよく鳴きましたよ。」"Ours barked a lot too, when she was young." Leaving the radio on quietly while the dog is alone helps, he told her. She tried it, only half believing, and the effect was astonishing. When she asked the person downstairs, she was told, "It's been quiet lately."
Three months later, a woman spoke to her in the lift.「最近、犬の声が聞こえなくなりましたね。」"You don't hear the dog any more these days, do you?" Kana realised that this was the person who had put the note in her letterbox. When she bowed and apologised, the woman waved her hands in a fluster.「あのときは、言い方がきつかったですね。"I was rather harsh in the way I put it, wasn't I? I should have just spoken to you directly, instead of writing something so rude." These days, whenever they meet in the corridor, Mocha wags her tail. Going up to her too suddenly might startle her, so Kana always keeps the lead short.
