By the station's north exit there was an empty shop unit of about ten square metres. In October a small coffee stand opened in that spot, which had gone unlet for a long time. It was started by Shinozaki, who had left his company job, and his younger sister Yuki.
Ahead of opening, the two of them called on every nearby shop in turn. The greengrocer, the florist, the dry cleaner's.「うるさくしたら、言ってください。」“If we make too much noise, do tell us.” The florist laughed, said “We start early too,” and gave them a potted plant.
For the week before opening, they were in the shop at six every morning, practising grinding beans. By the time they had poured water for thirty cups, their arms would no longer lift.
At half past six on the morning of the second of October, Shinozaki raised the shutter. Almost before it was up, a man in work clothes was standing there.「開いてますか。 “Are you open? One black, please.” Yuki's hands shook and she could not get the lid onto the paper cup.
Neither of them remembers what happened in the hour that followed. No sooner had a train pulled in than a queue formed at the window. The beans were half gone before ten.
Trouble came on the third day. The milk machine stopped at seven in the morning. When calling out an engineer, they were told, you have to get in touch by the previous day. That day they had to turn down every order with milk in it.「すみません、今日はブラックだけです。」“I'm sorry, it's black coffee only today.”
One of the customers they had turned away came back ten minutes later. In his hands were two cartons of milk.「向かいのスーパーで買ってきた。 “I got these at the supermarket opposite. Can't you use them?” Yuki bowed slightly and took them. That day a small queue formed in front of the stand.
Six months have passed since they opened. Now, almost before the shutter is up, three or so people are already forming a queue. There are more and more customers whose order they know without asking. When they close up, the two of them always go across to the florist to thank him for the plant. That first plant they were given is still spreading its leaves beside the till.
