When they cleared out his grandfather's house, Ashida took a large clock down from the wall. It was an old clock in a wooden case, with a pendulum. When Ashida was a child it had marked the hours with a low chime. The hands had been stopped at twenty past four for fifteen years.
Meaning to throw it out, he left it in the entrance hall for a while. But every time he walked past, their eyes met. In the end, Ashida carried the clock back to his own flat.
Finding somewhere that would repair it was harder than he had expected. The watch shop by the station said it only changed batteries. After ringing ten places, he finally learned that there was a workshop dealing in old clocks three towns away.
The workshop's owner was a small man of over seventy. He opened the case and looked inside for a long time.「部品が一つ、割れていますね。」“One of the parts is cracked.” The same part is no longer made. There was nothing for it, he said, but to file something similar down to fit.「半年、待てますか。」“Can you wait six months?”
Ashida nodded. After that he went along to the workshop every other week. Whenever he went, the owner was usually working on something else. Even so, just seeing his own clock on the bench put his mind at rest.
At the end of May, the phone rang.「動きましたよ。 “It's running. It chimes, too.” Ashida took a half day off work and got on the train. On the workshop bench, the pendulum was swinging quietly from side to side. After six months of work, the owner had restored even the pitch of the chime.
He hung it on the wall of his flat that same evening. At seven o'clock, for the first time in fifteen years, a low chime filled the room. Ashida stopped what he was doing in the kitchen and stood there until the last note faded.
The clock still chimes every hour. Sometimes it wakes him in the night. Even so, he has no thought of stopping it. That is because the smell of his grandfather's kitchen comes back along with the sound. After all that long hesitation, he is truly glad he brought it home.
