At the beginning of March, a large notice went up on the block's noticeboard. The major repair work that comes round once every ten years would begin in April. Prior to the start of the work, a briefing for residents was held in the meeting room. Hino finished work early and went to the briefing.
The work would take three months. Scaffolding would go up, and washing could no longer be hung out on the balconies. Even if the work was necessary, three months was too long, Hino thought.
After the briefing, Mrs Otsuki from next door spoke to her.「洗濯、どうしましょうね。」“What are we going to do about the washing?” The two of them had lived on the same floor for six years, but this was the first time they had stopped for a chat.
When April came, the building was wrapped in grey sheeting. The flat was dim all day, and morning was indistinguishable from night. At eight in the morning the clang of metal would start up overhead. Even with earplugs in, far from growing quieter the noise seemed to resound inside her body.
As it turned out, though, it was not all inconvenience. Residents who could not dry their washing began gathering in the ground-floor meeting room. Someone wrote the free slots for the dryer on a sheet of paper and sorted out an order. Mrs Otsuki would be there, making tea while she waited.
One Saturday, Hino too went down to the meeting room with her laundry basket. There she found a young couple with a child and an elderly lady from the seventh floor. Once they started talking, she realised they all used the same stairs and yet she did not even know their names. Far from being a nuisance, the work had become the place for six years' worth of introductions.
At the end of July, the scaffolding came down. Morning light suddenly poured into the whole flat. The walls were white again and the balcony railings were new. It had not merely been smartened up: the whole building looked like a different place.
Nobody took down the dryer timetable in the meeting room. These days notices with nothing to do with the repairs go up there.「来週、またお茶でも。」“Let's have tea again next week.” When Mrs Otsuki said that to her in the lift, Hino nodded. She can no longer call to mind the noise of those three months.
