The company hiking club decided to climb a two-thousand-metre mountain in October. Six people were going. The youngest was Yajima, in his second year at the firm, who had never climbed a high mountain.
It was Igarashi, the department head, who drew up the plan. They would stay at an inn at the foot of the mountain the night before and set off at four in the morning. Lunch at the summit, and down again by evening.「天気が悪ければ、途中でやめます。」“If the weather is bad, we turn back partway.” Igarashi said that over and over at the first meeting.
Yajima bought boots and walked three low hills nearby on his days off. For waterproofs, too, he got the sort that come as a separate jacket and trousers.「体力があるとしても、山は別だよ。」“Even if you're fit, the mountains are another matter.” A senior colleague in his section told him so.
The week before they left, the forecast was for fine weather. But on the evening before, contrary to the forecast, rain clouds came in from the west. The sky from the inn window was already grey.
That night the six of them gathered in the inn's main room. Igarashi spread out a map and traced two routes with his finger.「上まで行くにしろ、途中で引き返すにしろ、朝の五時に一度決めます。」“Whether we go all the way up or turn back partway, we will decide once, at five in the morning.”「今決めても、朝には変わっていますから。」“If we decide now, it will have changed by the morning.”
Yajima could not get to sleep that night. Having come all this way, he wanted to reach the summit. But pushing himself and causing trouble for the others would be worse still.
At half past four, the sound of rain had stopped. But Igarashi stood looking for a long time not at the sky but at the ground under his feet.「土が水を含んでいます。」 “Even if it clears up later, we'll slip on the way down.”
Their destination changed from the summit to the hut at the eighth station. They reached the eighth station just before nine. Through a break in the cloud, the town below came into view just once. The six of them boiled water there and ate the bread they had brought.
On the train home, Igarashi said to Yajima:「今日の判断は、正しいにしろ正しくないにしろ、来年また来れば分かります。」“Whether today's decision was the right one or not, we'll know if we come again next year.” Yajima looked at the mountains outside the window. Even if he does go next year, he thought, he will buy new boots.
