In the town where Maki lives, radio exercises are held in the park every morning from half past six. The man who has kept them going for nearly twenty years is a neighbour called Mr Toda. Mr Toda arrives first every morning and blows a whistle to signal the start. Maki began joining in last autumn. She is not a morning person, and at first she only managed to go once every three days.
One day, Mr Toda handed out a small slip of paper to everyone who had gathered. He said that from spring he would be away for six months, helping at his daughter's house.「しばらく、わたしに代わって笛を吹いてくれる人をさがしています。」“I'm looking for someone to blow the whistle in my place for a while.” The people there all looked at one another and fell silent.
The next morning, Maki made up her mind and raised her hand.「うまくできるか分かりませんが、戸田さんに代わってやってみます。」“I don't know if I can do it well, but I'll give it a try in Mr Toda's place.” Mr Toda taught her how to blow the whistle, one thing at a time. Mr Toda laughed, but his hand paused a little as he passed over the whistle.
April came, and Maki's mornings changed. She got up at six and left the house with the whistle. It is cancelled on rainy days, and that decision was hers now too. In the first week, the number of people halved. She thought that rather than give it up altogether, it was better to carry on badly.
At the end of May, a postcard arrived from Mr Toda. He wrote about how his days went by looking after his grandchild, and how he missed the park. At the end there was one line: “If I could, I would come back tomorrow morning and blow that whistle.” Maki pinned the postcard to the kitchen wall.
At the beginning of autumn, Mr Toda came back to the park. There were nearly thirty people now, and he was astonished.「よく続けてくれましたね」と、戸田さんは何度も言った。“You really kept it going,” he said, over and over. Carrying something on in another person's place had been far heavier than she had expected. Even so, Maki felt a little reluctant to hand the whistle back.「二人で順番にやりませんか」と言ったのは、戸田さんのほうだった。It was Mr Toda who said, “Shall we take turns, the two of us?” That morning the whistle sounded a little longer than usual.
