The primary school Miwa attended is to be rebuilt next year. The city newsletter said that the building could be visited before then. On Saturday afternoon, Miwa sent in a form and set off. Standing in front of the school gate, the building looked smaller than she had expected. It was the first time in twenty-five years, but the cherry tree beside the gate was unchanged.
Inside, the first thing she noticed was the smell of the floor. It is an old wooden floor treated with oil, and it makes a small sound as you walk. From the corridor window she could see the playing field, the same shape as before. It was as though time had stopped in this one place, Miwa thought.
Their guide was the current head teacher.「この校舎が建ったのは、六十年前です。」“This building went up sixty years ago.” The desks and chairs in the classrooms were new ones now. Even so, the timetable board beside the blackboard had the same shape as ever. Miwa stopped in front of the classroom she had used in her third year.
When she opened the door, light was coming into the empty room. The seat at the very back by the window had been hers. When she sat down on the chair, the desk was so low that she laughed. Perhaps it was not that she had grown, but that the desks were small. While she was thinking that, someone came in.
It was a woman from her year, and she remembered her as soon as she heard the name. As they talked, they came round to the large painting that used to be on the stair landing. There is nothing there now, but the colour of the wall is a little darker just at that spot. It appears that it was never repainted after the painting came down.
Last of all, the two of them went up to the roof. Mountains could be seen in the distance, with new houses lined up in front of them. The town has changed completely, yet the shape of the mountains alone is just as it was. Listening to the sound of the wind, it was as if she were back on a day when she gazed out from here during a lesson. On the way home, the two of them had tea at a shop by the station. Even when the building is gone, perhaps the smell of that floor will not be forgotten. When she said so, the other woman nodded and laughed, as though she were listening to a child.
