Miyashita has been in the town choir for three years now. Half of them are over sixty, and Miyashita is the second youngest. They rehearse every Thursday evening in the large hall of the community centre.
Their director is a woman called Mrs Makabe. As you would expect from someone who taught music at a secondary school for years, her explanations of how to produce the voice are very clear.「のどではなく、背中で歌ってください。」“Sing from your back, not your throat.” At first Miyashita had no idea what she meant, but after about six months her body understood.
This autumn it was settled that they would sing at the city hall. It is a big hall with as many as twelve hundred seats. Precisely because the venue was so large, the quieter members looked uneasy. Miyashita too suddenly felt the weight of her own place, the middle of the second row.
They were to sing three pieces, and one of them had a passage for the women alone. Eight bars. There were five of them, and Miyashita was one.
In September one of the five hurt her leg and had to drop out. That left four. “Let's do it with four,” said Mrs Makabe. With only four of them, each one's share of the responsibility clearly grew.
Miyashita practised at home in a small voice. Even so, the shape of those eight bars gradually came into view.
On the Thursday before the concert, Mrs Chiba, the choir's chair, brought along a large paper bag. Inside were black folders for everybody.「ホールは暗いから、譜面が白いと手元が目立つでしょう。」“The hall is dark, so white sheet music makes your hands stand out, doesn't it.” Knowing Mrs Chiba and her eye for detail, nobody was surprised.
On the day, when the curtain went up, the audience looked closer than she had expected. The eight bars arrived. The four voices came together on the very first note. Letting out her breath at the end, Miyashita realised she had not been able to hear her own voice. It was because the four voices had become one.
After the interval, Mrs Makabe said quietly:「長く続けてきただけに、今日の音はよかったですね。」“All the more for your having kept at it so long, today's sound was good.” In the middle of the second row, Miyashita turned those words over once more.
