Takuya has been renting a plot at the allotment since last month. The person who used it before was an older man called Mr Omori. Mr Omori moved to a town far away and handed the plot over to him. Inside the shed, several wooden signs had been left behind.
The first one says, “Water it first thing in the morning.” The second says, “Don’t water it on a summer afternoon.” The third says, “If you see an insect, take it off at once.” Every letter was thick, and at first Takuya thought them rather frightening.
But once he started work on the plot, he understood what the signs meant. If you water early in the morning, the leaves stand up firmly. If you water at midday, the soil gets hot and the roots are harmed. The signs were the things Mr Omori had learnt over many years.
At the end of August, a lot of tomatoes came through. Takuya shared some with the person on the next plot.「ここの土はいいと聞きました」とその人が言いました。“I heard the soil here is good,” that person said.
Takuya brought a board out of the shed and made signs of his own.「水は朝にやれ。」“Water it in the morning.”「昼にはやるな。」“Don’t water it at midday.”「となりの人にも分けろ。」“Share some with your neighbour.” He hopes the next person to use the plot will smile at them.
