On Sunday morning, Yuka's daughter Mio came into the kitchen.「ママ、私にも料理を手伝わせて。」"Mum, let me help with the cooking too." Mio started year three at primary school this year. She is still frightened of knives, but she was set on having a go. Yuka hesitated, then handed her three eggs and let her make a rolled omelette.
Mio cracked the eggs, but bits of shell got in. Yuka watched quietly without stepping in.「ゆっくりでいいよ。」"Take your time."
Half an hour later, a slightly burnt omelette was ready. The shape was odd, but Mio looked delighted. Her father took a mouthful and his eyes widened.「これは、お店の味だね。」"This tastes like something from a restaurant." Mio went red and laughed.
After that, Mio started cooking every Sunday.「ママ、今日は私に全部作らせて。」"Mum, let me make the whole thing today." Yuka left the kitchen to Mio and sat down on the sofa. She felt a little sad and a little proud at the same time.
At dinner, Mio said,「ママ、待たせてごめんね。どう?」"Sorry to keep you waiting, Mum. What do you think?" Yuka took a mouthful and couldn't say anything for a while.「…… …You might have got better than me." Yes!" said Mio, and ran back to the kitchen.
