Spring came for the first time since their daughter Hinata was born. Saki and Daichi decided to go to the park along the river nearby to see the cherry blossom. They had made rice balls and a rolled omelette the night before. Planning to take lots of photos, they had even charged the camera. The forecast was sunny, with only a light wind.
On the day, however, Hinata was in a bad mood from the moment she woke. It took over an hour just to get out of the house, and it was past eleven when they reached the park. They walked around looking for a spot, and finally spread their sheet under a tree. The moment they sat down, Hinata burst into tears. They changed her nappy and carried her about, and just as they thought she had stopped crying, she started making a fuss about being hungry. This was no time for looking at blossom.
When Saki took out the rice balls, Hinata grabbed one and pulled it to pieces. Grains of rice scattered over the sheet and their clothes. Daichi was too busy clearing it up to have a moment to look up at the blossom.「写真、一枚も撮ってないね。」"We haven't taken a single photo, have we?"「今は、それどころじゃないよ。」"We've got rather more pressing things to deal with." The two of them looked at each other and sighed.
In the end, they decided to go home after about an hour. As they were gathering their things, an older woman sitting next to them spoke to them.「よかったら、三人の写真を撮りましょうか。」"Shall I take a photo of the three of you, if you like?" Stains on their clothes aside, without even tidying their hair, the three of them hurriedly lined up. The woman pressed the shutter several times and handed the camera back.「うちも、子どもが小さいころは花見どころじゃありませんでしたよ。」"When our children were small, we were never in any state to enjoy the blossom either."
When they looked at the photo at home, all three of them were pulling strange faces. Saki's hair was a mess, and there were grains of rice on Daichi's clothes. Hinata had her mouth wide open, crying. The cherry blossom was only just visible at the edge of the frame. Even so, Saki chose that one photo, printed it and put it on the shelf in the living room. Next year, too, there will almost certainly be no chance of a leisurely look at the blossom. Even so, she thought she would make a few extra rice balls.
