A large potted plant stands by the entrance to the office. It was left behind by someone who worked there before, and nobody knows what it is called. Even when the office was rearranged last year, the pot stayed in the same place. It had been healthy until spring, but in June the leaves began to droop. Thinking it might be short of water, Miwa gave it plenty every morning.
Even so the colour did not come back. A week later the lower leaves turned yellow and fell. Perhaps because she had given too much water, something white had come up on the surface of the soil. Miwa realised she had been looking after it without finding anything out.
In her lunch break she took a photo to the florist nearby.「これは水をやりすぎると弱りますよ。」"This one gets weak if you overwater it." The shopkeeper asked whether there was a hole in the bottom of the pot.「土が乾いてから、次の水をやってください。」"Wait until the soil is dry before you water it again." Then she put in an order for some new soil.「届き次第、電話します。」"I'll ring you as soon as it arrives."
Three days later the soil arrived. On Sunday Miwa went into the office and changed the soil in the pot. There were fewer roots than she had expected, and they had grown thin. She cut off only the roots that had gone bad and left the rest as they were.
At the end of July a small new leaf appeared. Perhaps because the weather had turned hot, the leaves after that opened more quickly than before. The others in the office took to peering into the pot when they came in each morning.「今日は葉が三枚増えましたね。」"Three more leaves today." Miwa always touches the soil with a finger before watering. This tree whose name nobody knows is now the most looked-at thing in the office.
