Every year when autumn comes, there is a health check at my company. This year I heard there would be a stomach examination for the first time, and I was unsettled from a week beforehand. I worried so much that I hardly slept the night before. The information sheet said that if you are taking any medicine, you should tell the staff at reception. I am not taking any medicine, and yet I read that one line over and over.
When I arrived at the venue in the morning, Asano from my section was already waiting.「そんなに緊張しなくても大丈夫ですよ」と笑われた。"There's no need to be so nervous," she said with a laugh. My name was called and I went into the examination room. Kubo, the nurse, explained everything to me in a slow, calm voice. When she told me to hold my breath, I tensed up too much and my body went stiff. She told me again and again to drop my shoulders and breathe out slowly.
The examination was over in about ten minutes. Now that it was done, it had not been as hard as I had expected. If it was this easy, I should have had it done last year. When I went back to the waiting room, Asano brought me a cup of tea. She asked how it had gone, and I said I was perfectly fine now.
Two weeks later, an envelope with the results arrived. Before opening it, my heart started pounding again. I was so tense that I did not even notice I was holding the envelope upside down. The paper inside said that there was nothing in particular wrong. There was just one short line added, telling me to eat a few more vegetables. Reading that line, I was so pleased that I laughed out loud. Next year I want to go in a more relaxed frame of mind.
