In front of the civic hall the monthly flea market was in full swing. Without deciding what to buy, Yohei walked slowly among the crowd. Old clocks, well-used tools, plates that had been in use for years. Every one of them must have mattered to the person who owned it.
At the very back was a stall with cardboard boxes set out. In front of them stood a sign reading "Free. Up to three items per person." Inside were plates that matched neither in shape nor in colour. The stallholder was a man of about seventy, sitting on a chair reading a book.
Is it really all right to take some?"「置き場所がないからね。 I've nowhere to keep them. I'd rather give them to someone who'll use them." The longer he took over the boxes, the harder it became to choose. In the end he chose a round plate, a slightly chipped blue one and a long white one.
Back home, he washed the three and laid them out. The colours and the sizes are all over the place. All the same, to Yohei they were more interesting than new plates from a shop. That evening he put a grilled fish on the blue plate. The chip was hidden exactly when he laid his chopsticks down.
The next month Yohei went back to the same stall.「先月、皿をいただきました。 I took some plates last month. I use them every day." The man closed his book and smiled happily.「それが聞きたかったんだよ。」"That is just what I wanted to hear." The sign in front of the boxes again read "Up to three items per person". As the months went by, the plates in Yohei's kitchen slowly grew in number. Every one of them had become, for Yohei, an object with a memory attached.
