It was in spring that Kana started going to a calligraphy class. She had only done a little as a child and had forgotten even how to hold the brush. The class had everyone from people over seventy to secondary school pupils. The teacher spoke quietly and did not raise his voice towards a pupil.
On the first day Kana wrote the character for "mountain" a hundred times. Laying out the hundred sheets, she could hardly believe they were the same character.「初めてにしては、よく書けていますよ。」"For a first attempt, that's well written." That was what the teacher said, but Kana could not bring herself to like her own writing.
As the months went on, the characters she wrote grew gradually harder. As the number of strokes increased, she began to notice the white space on the paper. In answer to Kana's questions, the teacher always wrote on paper.「ここは少し待つ。 Wait a moment here. Stop the brush, then move it."
In autumn the class decided to put on a small exhibition. Each person would write a word they liked on one sheet and put it on the wall. Kana chose the three characters for "a beginning". For someone who had only been learning for six months, it was perhaps too big a word. All the same, she really wanted to write it.
On the day of the exhibition, a secondary school pupil stopped in front of the wall.「これ、好きです。 I like this one. The writing is quiet." Not knowing what to say, Kana simply bowed. When she left the classroom it was already dark outside. As time passed, the weight of the brush left in her hand faded away. Next spring too, she would probably be writing the same characters at the same desk.
