Mrs Asano's washing machine broke down on Friday night. Her child's sports day was the next day, and the PE kit had to be washed. So she decided to go to the laundrette in front of the station. The reason she went out so late at night was that she wanted it dry by morning.
Inside there were six large machines in a row. Mrs Asano did not know which machine she should use. Nowhere did it say how much money to put in, either.
From behind her, a girl who looked like a high school student spoke to her.「初めてなんですか。」"Is it your first time?"「ええ、うちの洗濯機が止まってしまったんです。」"Yes, our washing machine has stopped working." The girl explained that the three on the right both wash and dry.「服の量でお金が変わるので、まず重さを計ります。」"The price changes with the amount of clothes, so first you weigh them." It was the first time Mrs Asano knew where the weight is shown.
Forty minutes later the PE kit was nice and dry. The girl had already gone home. Mrs Asano wrote a short note about how to use the machines. She put the note up on the wall where anyone could see it.
The following week, some words in pencil had been added below it.「助かりました。」"This was a great help." Mrs Asano felt a little pleased.
