Mr Toda was put in charge of selling the second hand books from his house at the town festival. Even though he had been setting up since the morning, it started to rain at about ten. There were about three customers an hour.
The yakisoba stall next to him was selling well.「屋根があるからですよ。」"That is because we have a roof." The man at the stall said this and lent him a large umbrella. Mr Toda moved his books under the umbrella, but two boxes would not fit. So he put those two boxes back in his car.
Just after midday a boy came along on a bicycle. Even though his clothes were wet, he looked through the books slowly.「魚の図鑑はありますか。」"Do you have a picture book about fish?" Mr Toda remembered at once and went to fetch a box from the car.
The boy handed over a hundred yen and held the book in both hands.「ずっとさがしていたんです。」"I have been looking for this for ages." Mr Toda said, "I am glad you found it, but it is a little dirty, isn't it."「このページの線は、前の人が引いたんでしょうか。」"I wonder whether the person before me drew the lines on this page."「同じ魚が好きだった人かもしれませんね。」"Perhaps they liked the same fish as you do."
The festival finished at four. Only fifteen books had sold. Even though the rain had made it hard going, Mr Toda did not feel bad at all.
