片桐さんは、毎朝公園で体を動かすのが好きです。Mrs Katagiri likes moving her body in the park every morning.六時半になると、近所の人が十人ぐらい集まります。At half past six about ten people from the neighbourhood gather there.みんなで同じ体操をすることが、一日の始まりです。Doing the same exercises together is how her day starts.片桐さんが仲間に入ってから、もう二年になります。It has already been two years since she joined the group.
ある水曜日の朝、公園にはだれもいませんでした。One Wednesday morning there was nobody in the park.時計を見ましたが、時間はいつもと同じでした。She checked her watch, but the time was the same as always.片桐さんは、だれにも電話番号を聞いていませんでした。Mrs Katagiri had not asked anyone for a phone number.何も分からないまま、一人で体操を始めました。With no idea what was going on, she started the exercises on her own.
十分ほどたったとき、犬を連れた男の人が通りました。About ten minutes later a man walked past with a dog.「今日は公民館でやっていますよ。」"They are doing it at the community hall today."「先週、お知らせの紙がはってあったでしょう。」"There was a notice up last week, wasn't there?"片桐さんは、その紙を見ていませんでした。Mrs Katagiri had not seen that notice.公民館に集まることは、初めてでした。It was the first time the group had met at the community hall.
中に入ると、みんなが手をあげて笑いました。When she went inside, everyone raised a hand and laughed.「どこにもいないから、心配していたんですよ。」"You weren't anywhere, so we were worried about you."会長さんが、紙に電話番号を書いてくれました。The chairwoman wrote a phone number down on a piece of paper for her.「朝、雨が降りそうな日はここに来てください。」"Please come here on mornings when it looks like rain."片桐さんは、その紙をさいふに入れました。Mrs Katagiri put the paper in her purse.心配してくれる人がいるのは、ありがたいことでした。Having people who worry about her was something to be grateful for.
