Near Mrs Shinjo's house there is a small stand for vegetables. The paper beside it says "please help yourself". Mrs Shinjo, who moved in last month, looked for a box to put money in.
But there was no such box anywhere. She thought it was not right to take them home without saying anything. So for three days in a row she only looked and went home.
On the fourth morning a woman from the neighbourhood was watering the plants.「どうぞ、持って行ってください。」"Please, do take some." Mrs Shinjo asked her what the words on the paper meant.「『ご自由にどうぞ』は、お金はいらないという意味です。」"'Please help yourself' means you do not need to pay." The woman said that she puts out the vegetables she grows too many of on her plot.
But I think it is rude of me to take them for nothing."「お隣の奥さんも、初めは申しわけないと言っていましたよ。」"The lady next door said the same thing at first." The woman laughed and gave her three cucumbers.
That evening Mrs Shinjo made pickles. The next morning she put a small jar beside the box. When she went to look at midday, the jar was empty. On the lid was a note saying "they were delicious". Mrs Shinjo thought she had got a little used to this town.
