Last spring, my father left his job. After that he did nothing but watch television at home all day. Mum got a bit worried and suggested he take a bread-making class. He grumbled that cooking wasn't for men, but he went along once. And from that day, he was a different person.
Now he does nothing but make bread from morning till night. He stands in the kitchen without even eating breakfast. What comes out at mealtimes is bread, and only bread.
Dad, I'd quite like some rice today." Even when I say that, he just happily slices another loaf. His early loaves were as hard as stone, but lately they are genuinely good.
One day, Mrs Tanaka from down the road came round to ask for some. The following week, her friend came too. Dad started getting up at five every morning. Mum laughed and said, "You'll need to take bookings."
Last week, Dad showed me a little notebook. In it were the names of all the breads he had made so far. There were a hundred and twenty of them altogether.「次は、ケーキにも挑戦しようかな。」"Maybe I'll have a go at cakes next." Mum and I looked at each other and said quietly,「…… …Bread is quite enough, thanks."
