かさを持もたないで

エミは先月せんげつ、ロンドンに引ひっ越こしてきた。Emi moved to London last month.ロンドンは雨あめが多おおいと聞きいていたので、大おおきなかさを買かった。She had heard it rains a lot in London, so she bought a big umbrella.

でも、同おなじ会社かいしゃのジャックは、雨あめの日ひでもかさをささないで歩あるいている。But Jack, who works at the same company, walks about without an umbrella even on rainy days.「どうしてかさを使つかわないの？」"Why don't you use an umbrella?"「このくらいの雨あめなら、いらないよ。ロンドンの人ひとは、あまりかさを使つかわないんだ。」"You don't need one for rain like this. Londoners don't really use umbrellas."周まわりを見みると、ほかの人ひともかさを持たないで歩あるいていた。When she looked around, other people were walking without umbrellas too.

次つぎの日ひ、エミもかさを持たないで家いえを出でた。The next day, Emi left home without an umbrella as well.「私わたしもロンドンの人ひとみたい。」"I'm just like a Londoner."エミは少すこしうれしくなった。Emi felt quite pleased.ところが、駅えきに着つく前まえに、雨あめがどんどん強つよくなった。However, before she reached the station, the rain got heavier and heavier.エミはびしょぬれになって、会社かいしゃに着ついた。Emi arrived at work soaked through.

会社かいしゃの入いり口ぐちで、ジャックに会あった。At the entrance, she ran into Jack.ジャックは大おおきな黒くろいかさを持もっていた。Jack was holding a big black umbrella.「え？かさは使つかわないんじゃなかったの？」"What? I thought you didn't use umbrellas!"「今日きょうは天気予報てんきよほうで大雨おおあめだと言いっていたからね。エミは見ないで来きたの？」"The forecast said heavy rain today. Did you come out without checking it?"エミは何なにも言わないで、ハンカチで髪かみをふいた。Without a word, Emi dried her hair with a handkerchief.
