Next month, Misaki is moving from Kyoto to Fukuoka. Her new flat is a little smaller than her current one. So she decided to halve her belongings. She decided to sell all the clothes she never wears.
What was left at the end was a large box in the cupboard. Inside were essays and exercise books from primary school. A great many photographs came out too. Misaki sat down in front of the box and found she couldn't move.
In one photograph she was wearing a red school rucksack. Beside her stood her mother, young at the time. The next photograph was from a middle-school sports day. While she was looking at the photographs, it had grown completely dark outside.
Misaki rang her mother and told her about the box.「新しい部屋には、全部持っていくことができないの。」"I can't take all of this to the new flat." Her mother thought for a moment, then said,「じゃあ、一番好きなものを十枚だけ選びなさい。」"Then choose just ten of your favourites."
It took Misaki an hour to choose ten photographs. She decided to send the rest to her mother's house. She lined those ten up on the wall of the new flat. From that day, the small room became her home.
