Koji moved into a large block of flats last year. There are over a hundred flats, but he didn't know a single face. Even when people met in the lift, everyone looked at the floor. So he makes a point of greeting someone every morning.
Good morning." At first, more often than not there was no reply. Even so, Koji made sure to speak up every single day.
After a month, things slowly began to change. The old lady on the seventh floor started replying, "Morning." The child on the third floor began waving to him every morning. The inside of the lift feels brighter than it used to.
One evening, it suddenly began to rain on his way home from work. He had no umbrella, so he was stuck in front of the station. Just then, the old lady from the seventh floor handed him an umbrella.「いつもあいさつしてくれる人でしょう。 You're the one who always says hello, aren't you? Here you are."
The next morning, Koji went to return the umbrella. The old lady brought out tea for him.「毎朝あなたの声を聞いてから、一日を始めるようにしているのよ。」"I start my day by listening out for your voice every morning." Koji found that he couldn't say anything at all. Today too, just before the lift doors open, he takes a small breath.
