When Misaki was a child, she was made to go to an abacus class every week. It was not something she had asked to do herself. Her mother told her to go, so she went although she did not want to. At the class she was made to work out long numbers, one after another. She sat alone at a desk while her friends were playing outside.
Now Misaki works at a bakery in front of the station. One morning the till suddenly stopped working. The manager looked troubled and said, “What should we do?” Just then, Misaki remembered the old days.「わたし、紙とえんぴつで計算できます。」“I can do the sums with paper and a pencil.”
Misaki worked out each customer’s total in turn. She could see the beads in her head, and the answers came straight away. The queue grew shorter much sooner than she had expected. One of the customers praised her, saying, “You’re quick.” The manager, too, thanked her again and again.
That evening she rang her mother. Back then she had felt she was being forced to go. Now, though, she feels a little grateful.「今度の休みに、新しいそろばんを買いに行こう。」“On my next day off, I’ll go and buy a new abacus.”
