Emi took up running after she turned forty. At first she wore an old pair of trainers from home. After a month, her feet began to feel heavy. When she asked a friend about it, this is what she was told.「ちゃんとした靴を買ったほうがいいよ。」“You had better buy yourself proper shoes.”
On Saturday Emi went to a sports shop. There were so many shoes that she could not tell which was good. She asked Mr Miyamoto, the shop assistant.「どれをえらんだらいいですか。」“Which ones should I choose?” Mr Miyamoto measured her feet first.
“The right and the left are slightly different.”「大きいほうの足で決めたほうがいいです。」“You had better decide by the larger foot.”「それから、夕方に買ったらどうですか。」“And why don’t you buy them in the evening?”「朝より足が大きくなりますから。」“Your feet get bigger than in the morning.” Emi tried on three pairs in turn.
“I’m thinking of running ten kilometres every day.”「それは、急にしないほうがいいですよ。」“It would be better not to start that all at once.”「はじめは三十分だけ走ったらどうですか。」“Why don’t you run for just thirty minutes to begin with?” Everything Mr Miyamoto said was very kind.
When she ran in the new shoes, her feet felt light. Three months later, she was able to run ten kilometres. Now she tells her friends, “You had better start with the shoes.”
