Shota worked at the city swimming pool during the summer holidays. His job was to keep an eye on the children. On the first day he was given a sheet of paper. Seven rules were written on it.
“You must not run beside the pool.”「入る前に、シャワーをあびなくてはいけません。」“You have to shower before you get in.”「あめやガムを持って入ってはいけません。」“You must not bring sweets or chewing gum in.”「一人で深いところに行ってはいけません。」“You must not go into the deep end on your own.” But Shota has a quiet voice, so he was worried.
For the first three days he could hardly tell anyone off. Even when a child ran, all he said was, “Er, excuse me.” One of the older staff laughed and gave him some advice.「短く、はっきり言いなさい。」“Say it short and say it clearly.”「長い説明は、子どもには聞こえないよ。」“Children don’t hear long explanations.”
The next day he tried raising his voice.「そこ、歩きなさい。」“You there, walk.” The boy who had been running slowed to a walk at once.
On the last day of August, Shota forgot his cap. A girl called Miku spoke to him.「お兄さん、ぼうしをかぶらなくてはいけませんよ。」“You have to wear a cap, you know.” Shota felt embarrassed and put it on straight away. All the same, he was a little pleased to be told.
