ナオキさんの家に、古い写真が一枚あります。There is one old photograph in Naoki’s house.五十年前、祖父の家の前でとった写真です。It was taken fifty years ago in front of his grandfather’s house.すみが黄色くなって、人の顔が見えにくくなりました。The corners have turned yellow, and the faces are hard to make out.ナオキさんは、商店街の写真館へ行きました。Naoki went to the photo studio in the shopping street.
「すみません、この写真をきれいにしてもらえませんか。」“Excuse me, could you tidy this photograph up for me?”瀬戸さんは、明かりの下で写真をゆっくり見ました。Mr Seto looked at it slowly under the lamp.「こちらのいすにお座りください。」“Please take a seat on the chair here.”待っている間、店のかべの写真を見ていました。While he waited, Naoki looked at the photographs on the walls.
十分後、瀬戸さんがもどってきました。Ten minutes later Mr Seto came back.「元の写真はさわらないで、新しくコピーを作ります。」“I won’t touch the original, so I’ll make a fresh copy instead.”「三日後に、またお越しください。」“Please come in again in three days.”ナオキさんは、「大きいサイズも、二枚作っていただけませんか」と言いました。Naoki said, “Could you also make two in a larger size?”「兄と妹に送りたいんです。」“I’d like to send them to my brother and sister.”
三日後、写真はとてもはっきりしていました。Three days later the photograph was beautifully clear.ナオキさんは、瀬戸さんにもう一度頼みました。Naoki asked Mr Seto for one more thing.「この写真の話を、父にも説明してくれませんか。」“Could you explain the story of this photograph to my father too?”
次の日曜日、父と店に行きました。The following Sunday he went to the shop with his father.父は、その写真を長い間見ていました。His father looked at the photograph for a long time.そして、小さい声で「ありがとう」と言いました。Then, in a quiet voice, he said, “Thank you.”その写真は今、玄関の横にかけてあります。The photograph now hangs beside the front door.
