There is an old clock at the entrance to the shopping street by the station. For the past three months that clock has been stopped. Nobody could mend it, so everyone was at a loss. Souta is the florist in that shopping street. Ever since he was a child he has liked looking at machines.
One day Souta tried asking the chairman of the shopkeepers’ association.「あの時計の中を、見せてもらえませんか。」“Could you let me see inside that clock?” The chairman brought over a small key.「時計の下の箱に、説明の紙が入れてあります。」“There is a sheet of instructions in the box under the clock.” Souta climbed the ladder and opened the box.
Inside, a single screwdriver had been left there. On the sheet was the telephone number of the man who made the clock. Souta rang the number and asked how it was done. Then he followed the instructions and tried turning the screw slowly. There was a small click. The hands that had been stopped began to move.
The next day everyone gathered under the clock.「だれが直したんですか。」“Who was it who mended it?” The chairman laughed and said, “It was the florist.”
Now the clock tells the right time every day. In the morning Souta turns on the lights in his shop and then looks up at it.
