Yuriko has been learning to knit since last autumn. The first thing she is making is a scarf for her father. She went and bought the wool at a shop nearby. It is the deep green her father likes.
In the evenings she found that knitting in front of the television was fun. Before she knew it, the scarf kept getting longer and longer. At the beginning of December she finally knitted the last row. When she spread it out on the floor, it was about as long as the room. Yuriko had forgotten to measure it.
That Sunday her father came to the house. Yuriko was too embarrassed to wrap it, so she handed it over in the paper bag. Her father looked inside and could not help laughing a little. But he wound it twice round his neck and stood up straight away.「これなら、風が入らないな。」“With this, no wind will get in.”
From the end of December it gradually turned colder. Every morning her father wears the scarf when he goes out for a walk. Apparently the neighbours tell him it is splendid. Yuriko intends to make a short pair of gloves next. But she may well end up making those too big as well. From now on her knitting will surely keep improving.
