大学の近くに、小さい食堂があります。There is a small diner near the university.店長の桜井さんが、一人で作って運んでいます。Mr Sakurai, the owner, cooks and serves everything on his own.お昼は、学生がたくさん来ます。At lunchtime a great many students come in.でも、三時をすぎると、店は静かになります。After three o’clock, though, the place goes quiet.
ある日、リーさんという留学生が来ました。One day a student from abroad called Lee came in.ごはんを食べたあとで、こう言いました。After he had eaten, he said this.「すみません、ここで少し勉強させてください。」“Excuse me, please let me study here for a while.”桜井さんは「どうぞ、すみの席を使って」と言いました。Mr Sakurai said, “Go ahead, use the seat in the corner.”
それから、リーさんは毎日その席に来ました。From then on, Lee came to that seat every day.わからない漢字は、桜井さんに教えてもらいました。He had Mr Sakurai teach him the kanji he did not know.作文も、二回直してもらいました。He also had his compositions corrected twice.桜井さんは昔、国語の先生になりたかったそうです。Apparently Mr Sakurai had once wanted to be a Japanese teacher.
十二月、リーさんは試験に合格しました。In December, Lee passed his examination.お礼がしたくて、リーさんは言いました。Wanting to thank him, Lee said this.「あしたから、お昼だけ手伝わせていただきます。」“From tomorrow, please allow me to help out at lunchtime.”はじめは、桜井さんはことわりました。At first Mr Sakurai refused.
今、リーさんは十二時から一時までお皿を運びます。Now Lee carries plates from twelve until one.お金はもらっていません。He is not paid anything.そのかわり、毎日昼ごはんを作ってもらっています。Instead, he has his lunch made for him every day.「国に帰る前に、一日だけ台所に立たせてください。」“Before I go home, please let me stand in the kitchen for just one day.”桜井さんは、笑ってうなずきました。Mr Sakurai laughed and nodded.
