坂井さんは今月、デパートの案内係になりました。Ms Sakai started work this month as a guide at a department store.初めの三日間は、先輩の横で話し方を習いました。For the first three days she learnt how to speak from the senior member of staff beside her.先輩はいつも「はい、こちらでございます」と言います。Her senior always says, "Yes, it is right over here."坂井さんも同じように言いましたが、声が小さくなりました。Ms Sakai said it the same way, but her voice went quiet.
ある朝、年を取ったお客さまが来ました。One morning an elderly customer came to the counter.「子ども服の店はどこですか。」"Where is the children's clothing section?"坂井さんは心配になって、すぐに答えられませんでした。Ms Sakai felt anxious and could not answer straight away.そのとき、先輩が横から答えました。Just then her senior answered from beside her.「子ども服は五階でございます。」"Children's clothing is on the fifth floor, madam."お客さまはお礼を言って、エレベーターに乗りました。The customer thanked her and got into the lift.
昼休みに、先輩が坂井さんに言いました。At lunchtime her senior said something to Ms Sakai.「あのエスカレーターに乗ると、すぐ目の前が子ども服です。」"If you take that escalator, the children's clothing is right in front of you."「道を聞かれたら、頭の中で歩いてみるといいですよ。」"When someone asks you the way, it helps to walk there in your head."坂井さんは休みの日に、全部の階を歩いてみました。On her day off, Ms Sakai walked round every floor.
次の週、同じお客さまがまた来ました。The following week the same customer came again.「今度はくつを見たいんです。」"This time I would like to look at shoes."「くつは三階でございます。」"Shoes are on the third floor, madam."「歩きやすいくつなら、右の店がおすすめでございます。」"If you want shoes that are easy to walk in, I would recommend the shop on the right."お客さまは「上手になりましたね」と笑いました。The customer laughed and said, "You have got good at this."坂井さんの声は、もう小さくなりませんでした。Ms Sakai's voice did not go quiet any more.
