Since spring Mr Fukuhara has been growing tomatoes on his balcony. He waters them every day, but they do not get any bigger. No matter how much he looks after them, the leaves stay a pale colour. Even when he read a book about it, he could not work out why.
One Saturday a woman from the same floor spoke to him.「うちのトマトは、もう赤くなりましたよ。」"Our tomatoes have gone red already." When she let him look, he found it was a spot that caught the sun from early morning. On Mr Fukuhara's balcony, no sun comes in even by midday.
So there isn't enough sun."「鉢を動かしてみたらどうですか。」"Why don't you try moving the pots?" That day Mr Fukuhara carried the pots over near the railing. Even though each one was heavy, he moved them all, a little at a time.
A month later three small fruits had formed. While he waited for them to go red, going out onto the balcony each morning was something he looked forward to. He had been thinking that if this year went badly he would give up. But now he intends to try again next year.
Mr Fukuhara put one on a plate and took it round to the woman's flat.「小さくても、味は強いですよ。」"Even though it is small, the taste is strong." She laughed and said, "Next year I will be the one who loses."
