Daniel goes to a local cookery class twice a month. The teacher is Mr Yamamoto, who is seventy. The classroom is full of new equipment. But Mr Yamamoto always uses one old, heavy frying pan. It is black and huge, and it looks heavy just standing there.
One day, Daniel borrowed the pan. It was heavy and hard to hold, and he couldn't turn the vegetables properly.「先生、これは私には使いにくいです。」"Sir, this is really difficult for me to use."
Mr Yamamoto laughed.「最初は、だれでもそう言いますよ。」"Everyone says that at first."「でも、十年使うと、手の一部みたいになるんです。」"But after ten years, it becomes part of your hand."「新しいものは軽くて持ちやすいけど、すぐ冷めてしまいますからね。」"New ones are light and easy to hold, but they cool down straight away."
When he got home, Daniel looked at his own kitchen. There was just one light frying pan. With that, he could never produce a flavour like Mr Yamamoto's. The next weekend, Daniel went to a shop selling old kitchen equipment.
He bought a heavy pan and grilled some meat with it that night. It was heavy, hard to wash, and a nuisance to put away. But the meat was astonishingly good. When he told the class about it, Mr Yamamoto laughed and said, "Only nine years to go, then."
