Yukari is in her third year of working at the city library. Checking the returned books one by one is her morning job. All sorts of things come out from between the pages. Receipts, notes, train tickets. If the owner can be identified she contacts them, but usually there is nothing for it but to throw them away.
One morning, a pressed flower slipped out of an old plant encyclopaedia. It was a small blue flower, carefully dried between sheets of paper. On the back, in thin handwriting, it said, "10 June, on the river bank". With no name and no year written on it, there was no way to track down the owner. Seven people had borrowed that book in the past year alone. She could hardly go round asking each of them.
Yukari showed the pressed flower to Mr Utsumi, the head librarian. He looked at it for a while, and then said this.「この花は、この辺りの川原に春の終わりに咲くものですね。」"This flower blooms on the riverbanks around here at the end of spring." The encyclopaedia fell open easily at that page, so you could tell someone had looked at the same spot many times.「返しようがないなら、しばらく預かっておきましょう。」"If there's no way of returning it, let's look after it here for a while." The pressed flower was put away in a drawer at the counter.
That summer, the library decided to put on a small exhibition. The theme was "Things left inside books". Notes and tickets whose owners were unknown were laid out in a glass case. The pressed flower, of course, was displayed along with them. While it has become possible to look anything up on the internet, records left on paper have grown fewer. The exhibition proved unexpectedly popular, not just with children but with adults too.
On the last day of the exhibition, a woman stopped in front of the case. She was tall, and around seventy years old.「これ、私が挟んだものです」と、その人は小さな声で言った。"That one — I'm the one who put it in there," she said in a small voice. When she was young, apparently, she used to collect wild flowers to practise drawing. Yukari hurried to fetch the pressed flower from the drawer and tried to hand it to her. But the woman would not take it, and said this.「ここに置いてください。"Please keep it here. If I have it on my own, there's nobody I can show it to."
