Hiroki started running three years ago, in the spring. It was less for health reasons than simply on a whim. His colleague Mr Okada invited him along, and he couldn't quite refuse. On the first day, he was out of breath before he had run even two kilometres. The next day, even going down the stairs was painful.
After that, he began leaving the house at six in the morning three times a week. On winter mornings, how many times he thought about giving up while still under the covers! On rainy days, he thought up any number of excuses not to run. Even so, every week Mr Okada would message him to say how many kilometres he had run. Just that one line, strangely enough, got his legs moving. As the distances he ran grew longer, his body slowly changed as well.
In the autumn of the second year, the two of them entered the ten-kilometre race at the city marathon. For Hiroki, it was his first ever event. On the day, three thousand people had gathered at the start. When the gun went off, he was carried along by the flow of runners. Up to five kilometres, his body felt surprisingly light. But from somewhere after seven kilometres, his legs grew heavy.
On the uphill stretch of the final kilometre, Hiroki very nearly slowed to a walk. Just then, he heard someone calling his name from the roadside. Mr Okada, who had already finished, had come back to cheer him on. How much courage that gave him! Hiroki gritted his teeth and made it to the top of the last slope. His finishing time was a full three minutes slower than his target.
Even so, he still remembers the moment he crossed the line perfectly clearly.「三年前の自分に、この写真を見せてやりたいよ。」"I'd love to show this photo to the man I was three years ago." Looking at his finisher's certificate, Hiroki said this to Mr Okada. Next year he intends to enter the twenty-kilometre race. How many more times will he want to give up between now and then! Even so, if he remembers that final kilometre, he can probably keep going. Tomorrow morning, too, he will leave the house at six.
