With the move in April, Mei's company lost its staff canteen. The new building was close to the station, smart, and had more meeting rooms. But the canteen that had been on the fifth floor was the one thing there was no room for. At lunchtime, the staff scattered to convenience stores and cafés. The break room that replaced it was never even half full.
Along with the loss of the canteen, a few problems appeared. The shops nearby were all crowded, and queuing alone took twenty minutes. More people bought a lunchbox and ate at their desks, and chances to talk during the lunch break were steadily disappearing. What worried Mei most was how the new recruits looked. She often saw one of them eating lunch alone with their earphones in. Until last year, a senior colleague would have spoken to them in the canteen.
One Wednesday, Mei took the plunge and put a large sheet of paper up in the break room.「水曜日は、ここでお昼を食べませんか。」"On Wednesdays, why not have lunch here?" In the first week, the only person who came was Mr Sakuma from her own section. Eating rice balls together, they talked about things that had nothing to do with work. Mr Sakuma's hobby is fishing, and once he starts he doesn't stop. The following week, Mr Sakuma brought two junior colleagues with him.
Three months on, the Wednesday break room was lively with nearly twenty people. What they bring is nothing more than lunchboxes, bread, cup soup and the like. Even so, the conversation spreads across departments.「ほかの課の人と初めて話しました」と、新入社員の一人が言った。"It's the first time I've properly talked to someone from another section," said one of the new recruits. Mei had thought it could never take the place of the canteen. But she realised that it didn't have to.
Last month, an email arrived from the general affairs department. In line with requests from staff, two microwaves were to be installed in the break room. On the first day they were used, what Mr Sakuma heated up was a lunchbox with a large piece of fish in it. The smell spread through the whole room and everyone laughed.「これは、さすがに怒られるかもしれませんね。」"We're bound to get told off for this, aren't we?" Even so, there was no denying that the break room was livelier that day than ever.
