It was about ten years ago that Yoko started making jam. Every year the tree in her garden bears more plums than they can eat. It seemed a waste, so she tried boiling some down while following a book, and that was how it began. When she handed jars out to people she knew, they were all delighted. Because there are many fruit farms nearby, she never had any trouble getting ingredients.
Last autumn, a friend suggested that Yoko take a stall at the monthly morning market.「洋子さんのジャム、売ればいいのに。」"You really ought to sell that jam of yours." Yoko laughed and said no.店を出すなんて、自分には無理だと思っていた。Running a stall was something she thought was quite beyond her. Still, she was asked again and again, and in the end she applied for a pitch. Once she had decided, she lay awake night after night.
On the day of her first market, Yoko lined up fifty jars. How to price them, how much change to bring: it was all guesswork. To her astonishment, the jars all sold within about two hours. To her delight, some people even said on the spot that they would come again next month. Awkwardly, though, Yoko had not prepared any contact details at all. There was no guarantee at all that she would meet them again.
At the second market, several customers from the month before came back. A young mother with a small child picked up three jars.「これ、パンに塗るだけじゃなくて、ヨーグルトにも入れているんです。」"I don't just spread this on bread, I put it in yoghurt too." From a young person's point of view, homemade jam is apparently something of a rarity. To Yoko, it was simply an ordinary thing in her kitchen. From that day on, Yoko started writing a short recipe on the back of her labels.
Six months passed, and the market's regular customers slowly grew in number. Last month, a woman called Mrs Kawakami spoke to her.「作り方を教えてもらえませんか。"Could you teach me how to make it? We have a plum tree in our garden too." Curiously, Yoko did not hesitate for a moment. From next month, once a month, she will be teaching in her own kitchen. By then, the plums in the garden should be colouring again.
