台風たいふうの夜よる

大学院だいがくいんに進学しんがくした拓也たくやは、この春はる、川沿かわぞいの古ふるいアパートに引ひっ越こしてきた。Takuya, who had started graduate school, moved into an old flat by the river this spring.研究室けんきゅうしつと部屋へやを往復おうふくするだけの毎日まいにちで、近所きんじょの人ひととはほとんど話はなしたことがない。His days consisted of going back and forth between the lab and his flat, and he had hardly ever spoken to his neighbours.ときどき回まわってくる回覧板かいらんばんも、中なかを見ずに隣となりの部屋へやに回まわしていた。Even the community notice board that came round now and then, he passed on to the next flat without looking inside.

九月くがつの終おわり、大おおきな台風たいふうが近ちかづいてきた。At the end of September, a big typhoon was approaching.テレビでは、「今夜こんや、川かわがあふれるおそれがあります」と繰くり返かえし伝つたえていた。The TV kept repeating, "There is a risk that the river may overflow tonight."それでも拓也たくやは、アパートの二階にかいなら大丈夫だいじょうぶだろうと、あまり気きにしていなかった。Even so, Takuya wasn't too worried, thinking he'd be fine on the first floor.

夜よるの八時はちじごろ、玄関げんかんのチャイムが鳴なった。At around eight in the evening, the doorbell rang.ドアを開あけると、レインコートを着きた年配ねんぱいの女性じょせいが立たっていた。When he opened the door, an elderly woman in a raincoat was standing there.一階いっかいに住すんでいる、町内会長ちょうないかいちょうの村井むらいさんだった。It was Mrs Murai, the head of the neighbourhood association, who lived on the ground floor.「川かわがあふれたら、このあたりの道みちが使えなくなるおそれがあるの。"If the river overflows, there's a risk the roads round here will be cut off.今いまのうちに、避難所ひなんしょの小学校しょうがっこうへ一緒いっしょに行いきましょう。」Let's go to the evacuation centre at the primary school together while we still can."

拓也たくやが「どうして僕ぼくのことを」と聞きくと、村井むらいさんは笑わらった。When Takuya asked, "Why did you think of me?", Mrs Murai laughed.「回覧板かいらんばんに、災害さいがいのときに声こえをかけてほしい人ひとの名簿めいぼがあったでしょう。"There was a list in the notice board of people who'd like someone to check on them in a disaster, wasn't there?あなた、いつも名前なまえを書かずに回まわすから、かえって気きになっていたのよ。」You always passed it on without writing your name, so that actually made me worry about you."

避難所ひなんしょの体育館たいいくかんには、近所きんじょの人ひとが五十人ごじゅうにんほど集あつまっていた。About fifty people from the neighbourhood had gathered in the gym at the evacuation centre.床ゆかに敷しいたマットの上うえで、みんな静しずかに雨あめの音おとを聞きいていた。Everyone sat quietly on mats spread across the floor, listening to the rain.拓也たくやは村井むらいさんに頼たのまれて、毛布もうふを運はこんだり、お年寄としよりの荷物にもつを持もったりした。At Mrs Murai's request, Takuya carried blankets and helped elderly people with their bags.隣となりに座すわった小学生しょうがくせいにスマホで台風たいふうの進路しんろを見みせてやると、とても喜よろこばれた。When he showed the primary-school child sitting next to him the typhoon's path on his phone, the child was delighted.

幸さいわい、川かわはぎりぎりのところであふれなかった。Fortunately, the river came very close but did not overflow.翌朝よくあさアパートに戻もどると、ドアのポストに回覧板かいらんばんが入はいっていた。When he returned to his flat the next morning, the notice board was in his letterbox.拓也たくやは初はじめて、中なかの紙かみを一枚いちまいずつ読よんだ。For the first time, Takuya read the papers inside one by one.そして、名簿めいぼの一番いちばん下したに自分じぶんの名前なまえと部屋番号へやばんごうを書かいた。Then he wrote his name and flat number at the bottom of the list.少すこし考かんがえてから、「手伝てつだえることがあれば、声こえをかけてください」と書かき足たした。After a moment's thought, he added: "If there's anything I can help with, please let me know."
