The city library is a five-minute walk from the station. Park Ji-woo comes here once a month to borrow Japanese textbooks. One Saturday, Ji-woo went up to the first floor to return a book. As she climbed the stairs, laughter came from a room at the back.
On the door was a notice: "Japanese Chat Circle - everyone welcome". When she peeped in, about ten people were sitting in a circle. A member of staff came out and said, "Do come in, if you'd like to." The topic that day was "Breakfast in my home town".
Not only Japanese people took part, but plenty of foreign factory workers too. Ji-woo was nervous, but Mrs Ogawa, beside her, asked questions slowly. That day she not only practised her Japanese, she was also told about a cheap greengrocer. On the way home, Ji-woo's step was lighter than usual.
Six months on, she goes to the circle every week. Not only has her speaking improved, she has more friends as well. Precisely because she sees the same people every week, mistakes do not bother her.「ジウさん、今度は案内役をお願いできませんか。」"Ji-woo, would you take on the role of guide next time?" When the staff member said that to her, she was genuinely astonished.
These days Ji-woo is the one who explains the circle to newcomers.「ここでは日本語の練習ができるばかりでなく、町のことも分かりますよ。」"Here you can not only practise your Japanese, you learn about the town as well."「私も最初は一人でした。 I came on my own at first too. It is thanks to this circle, I think, that I made friends." The newcomer nodded, looking a little reassured. Even now, Ji-woo is glad that she went up those stairs that day.
